Vocational & Community Service - summary of year 2007/08

Introduction

This year we have participated in the joint ventures with other Medway clubs and carried on with the tradition of the Christmas Float. We have now manned the Arthritis care transport for over a year and this project is going along smoothly. The tour and evening out at the Sunlight Centre was a worthwhile and enjoyable event and we are intending to expand our program of VOCOM visits.

Projects we have supported this year

Youth Speaks
This joint event was as successful as in previous years and we had the winners repeat their speeches at the VOCOM evening, where you were able to judge for yourself on the standard and maturity of the two winners

Christmas Float
Our float was again successful this year and members have supported both the street and static collection. Over £2,700 was raised to support our chosen charities, includig SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association)

Windows Children’s Home
Our annual Christmas morning visit to a local children's home. As those who were present when representatives from Windows came along will testify, Windows staff place a high value on the contribution we are making (and not only in financial terms).

Young Musicians
We again participated in jointly organising this annual event event and increased the ticket sales to the club. The performances by the youngsters lived up to the usual high standard.

Young Enterprise
The competitors in the Young Enterprise scheme continue to impress and if you haven’t been to the Medway finals before I thoroughly recommend it. The quality of the ideas (and the products) is quite outstanding. OUr club sponsor the prize for the winning company in the North Kent area

Mock Interviews
We continiue to provide mock interviews for pupils in local schools, an experience we and they find very rewarding.

In conclusion

We have had another successful year and participated in many events. This is only possible because of the work carried out by club members organising and participating in activities.

The success of all of our VOCOM activities relies on the club membership volunteering and attending the functions and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and encourage you to help out with activities in the coming year. We also welcome any suggestions as to activities that we can get involved with.
